Sandy Hook Promise is a national nonprofit organization founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The mission of Sandy Hook Promise is to educate and empower youth and adults to prevent violence in schools, homes, and communities. Through their “Know the Signs” programs and bipartisan legislation, they teach young people and adults to recognize, intervene, and get help for individuals who may be socially isolated and/or at risk of hurting themselves or others.

In a short time, they have grown from a small organization into a nationally recognized, enterprise-level nonprofit that needs technology systems that can support sustained growth for years to come.

Purpose

Sandy Hook Promise engaged Craftsman Technology Group starting in 2023 to establish governance and scalability in their systems, most notably across two Salesforce instances. They were scaling quickly, facing high data volumes, and needed to develop architecture that would serve them well into the future.

We established an internal environment management program that accelerated their development time and created a path to production that allowed them to test new updates before they go live.

They are a multifaceted and complex organization structurally, with one Salesforce instance dedicated to their programmatic work and another Salesforce instance dedicated to fundraising and donor engagement. We supported their journey to clean up the data, flows, and technical debt in their programmatic Salesforce instance, while creating greater alignment with the fundraising instance.

Managed Services Engagement

Technical debt reduction. We reduced technical debt by implementing best practices for resource efficiency within automations. Across their two Salesforce instances, we deprecated or consolidated over 170 inactive flows, eliminated 250+ custom fields, and uninstalled 36 managed packages. This significantly reduced errors and improved system reliability.

Business intelligence. We were able to successfully offload 19 million transactional records from Salesforce into cost-effective archive storage, reducing storage costs and providing staff with the access and functionality they need for historical reporting. We enabled the team on the Microsoft tools running alongside the Salesforce platform.

Rapid development and change management. We implemented an environment management plan to provide structure for rapid deployments. We started by helping them to select a change management tool, Gearset, which allowed them to prepare updates in pre-production staging environments. These developments aligned their work with their overall organizational strategy at another level.

Our work is centered around advanced technical support, as the organization has a skilled team of internal admins that can meet day-to-day needs. Their in-house capacity allows our team to work on wider improvements and more specialized needs.

We are diving deeper into improving automations throughout their technology stack, integrating payment platforms that have historically run manually, and enhancing programmatic work in Salesforce.
