Nonprofit Cloud will become the default solution on the Salesforce platform for Nonprofit organizations in the years ahead. It is exciting to see Salesforce continue to invest in the nonprofit sector. A key feature of Salesforce as a technology provider is its continued commitment to innovation and evolving to meet the future needs of its customers.
There are a few key considerations we would offer as guidance to nonprofit organizations. These will be especially important to keep in mind as momentum builds for Nonprofit Cloud:
-
Nonprofit Cloud will not be applicable to every nonprofit. If your organization is not currently using the Nonprofit Success Pack (NPSP) or is using it in a very limited way, the Nonprofit Cloud developments are unlikely to impact your organization in the near future. This is true of many of our community development organizations who are largely leveraging Sales Cloud and/or Experience Cloud now.
-
Nonprofit Success Pack (NPSP) is expected to be available for many years to come. Organizations currently leveraging NPSP can continue to use the solutions they have now without concern for a looming end-of-life announcement.
-
Nonprofit Cloud involves a complete change in data structure from NPSP. Moving from NPSP to NPC will not be a simple process, especially for organizations that have customized NPSP extensively. Luckily, there is no rush to migrate.
Here is the guidance we would offer every organization leveraging the platform today:
-
Continue to stay current on the platform. Most organizations have “technical debt” that should be the immediate focus of our attention. Legacy code, outdated configuration, inactive applications, or fields/objects not in use are all examples of technical debt. Prioritize work to improve current use. This is in service of the present, but will also make a future move more manageable in the years ahead.
-
Begin to plan for a future migration. As we noted, you need not be an early adopter. However, the nonprofit organizations we serve tend to think in years (not months!). Begin to plan now for a migration to the newest version of Salesforce’s nonprofit solution even if that move does not happen until 2025 or 2026.
As a Salesforce partner with one of the deepest nonprofit technology teams in the sector, Craftsman Technology Group will be actively engaged in the product development and migration plans for Nonprofit Cloud.
For now, we are recommending patience and awareness over early adoption. We will continue to be a source of current information.
